For students

Kublio: what you should know

Hello. Kublio is the program where you build worlds and write code to make things happen in them. Here are the rules, and some promises we make to you.

They are short on purpose. You should be able to read all of them.

Your work belongs to you

Everything you build in Kublio is yours.

The worlds you make, the code you write, the things you say about your own work: you made them, and they are yours. We do not own them. We will never sell them. We will never put them in an advertisement.

Where your work is kept

Your school uses Kublio in one of two ways. Your teacher can tell you which one.

If your school has Kublio Server, nothing you make in Kublio leaves your school.

Kublio Server does not live on the internet. It lives on a computer at your school. When you save a world, it goes onto that computer, in your school, and it stays there. It does not go to us. We never see it. We could not look at your work even if we wanted to, because there is no way for it to get to us.

That is also why Kublio Server still works when the internet is down.

If your school uses Kublio Cloud, your work is kept on computers we look after, in Sydney, in Australia.

Kublio Cloud lives on the internet, so it needs the internet to work. When you save a world, it goes onto our computers, and we keep it there for your school. It is still your work and it is still private until you hand it in.

Who can see your work

Your work is private until you hand it in. Nobody else in your class can see a world you are building. Not your friends, not the person next to you.

When you hand something in, your teacher can see it. That is the whole point of handing it in.

Teachers can only see the work of the children they teach. A teacher from a different class cannot see yours.

What your school knows about you

Only a few things:

  1. Your name.
  2. Your class, and that you are a student.
  3. Your school email address, if your school uses Kublio Cloud. It is how Kublio knows it is you when you sign in.
  4. A secret check for your password or PIN (see below).
  5. The things you make.

That is all of it. Kublio does not know your birthday, where you live, your phone number, or anything about your family. It does not know where you are. It has no photo of you. It keeps no marks and no grades.

Your password or PIN

If your school uses Kublio Cloud, you sign in with your school account or with a password. If your school has Kublio Server, your teacher may give you a PIN instead.

Keep it to yourself. Do not tell your friends, even the ones you trust. If somebody knows your password or PIN they can open your work and change it, and everyone will think it was you.

If you forget it, that is completely fine. Tell your teacher and they will help you get a new one. You will not be in trouble.

Kublio does not store your password or PIN anywhere. It stores a special scrambled check instead. Nobody can read it back out, not your teacher, not us. That is why a forgotten one gets replaced instead of looked up.

If you record your voice

Kublio has a Record button so you can put your own sounds in your world. It only turns the microphone on when you press it, and your computer will ask you first.

If you record something, it is saved in your world, like everything else: on your school's computer if your school has Kublio Server, or on our computers in Sydney if your school uses Kublio Cloud. Nobody outside your school hears it.

If you would rather not record your voice, you never have to. Nothing in Kublio needs it.

Things we ask you to do

  • Use your own account. Do not sign in as somebody else, even as a joke.
  • Do not go looking in other people's work. If you find a way to see something that is not yours, that is not a prize, it is a bug. Tell your teacher, and we will fix it. You have actually helped us.
  • Be kind in what you write. Other people read the words you put in your worlds. Write things you would be happy for your teacher and your family to read, because they can.
  • Do not put private things in your worlds. Not your address, not your phone number, not anybody else's. Not even in a joke sign in the corner of the map.
  • Do not try to break it on purpose. Trying to break it by accident, while you are building something ambitious, is completely allowed and is how most good things get made.

Things we promise you

  • We will not show you ads. There are none in Kublio and there never will be.
  • We will not watch what you do. We do not look at your work unless your school asks us to help with something, and we do not keep track of how long you spend or how many tries it took.
  • We will not sell anything about you to anybody.
  • We will not use your work to teach a computer to make things. Your work is yours.
  • We will tell your school the truth if we ever get something wrong.

If you make a mistake

You will. Everybody does.

If you delete something by accident, tell your teacher straight away. Kublio keeps a spare copy of the last version of a world, so quite often it can be got back.

If you are worried you have broken something, saying so early makes it easier to fix, not harder. Nobody here thinks less of somebody who says "I think I broke it".

If something upsets you

If you see something in Kublio that upsets you, or somebody uses it to be unkind to you, tell a teacher or a grown-up at home. That is always the right thing to do and it is never annoying.

Can you say no?

Kublio is something your school chose, like a maths book or a science kit. Your school decides which programs you use in class.

But you can always ask your teacher what happens to your work, and they should be able to tell you. You are allowed to ask. Asking what a computer knows about you is a good habit and you should keep it for the rest of your life.

If you want to see everything Kublio has about you

Ask your teacher. Your teacher can ask the school's computer for one list of everything it holds about you: your name, your classes and groups, every world you made, everything you handed in, the sounds you recorded, the things you wrote in somebody else's world, and what your teacher wrote down about your work. It will not include your password or PIN, and it will not include anything about anybody else, because their work is theirs.

If you want your work deleted

Ask your teacher. Your school can delete it. If your school uses Kublio Cloud, we delete our copies too when your school asks us to.

These rules are for Kublio, made by AirbourneIT. If a grown-up wants the longer version, it is in the terms at kublio.com.au/terms and the privacy statement at kublio.com.au/privacy.
